Once your flight has landed and you've deplaned, you'll proceed through immigration and then head to the baggage claim area to collect your luggage. After you have all your bags, you'll go through the final customs check.
The most important thing to know is that the car rental representatives are located after you exit the customs area into the main public arrivals hall. Unlike some airports, the rental counters and cars are not located inside the main terminal building. So, focus on getting through customs first, and don't worry about looking for rental counters until you are officially "landside."
To ensure a smooth flow of traffic and maximize space, nearly all car rental companies at SJO operate from dedicated facilities located a short distance from the airport terminal. This is the standard procedure here and is a very organized system.
To get to your car, you will take a complimentary shuttle service provided by the rental company you booked with through QEEQ. This is a quick and efficient process, and the shuttles run continuously to meet arriving passengers.
Exit Customs
After collecting your luggage and passing through the final customs checkpoint, you will walk through a set of sliding glass doors into the public arrivals hall. This is where family, friends, and drivers wait.
Locate Your Agency's Rep
As you enter the hall, look for the area with official representatives. You will see people holding signs or standing near small kiosks for the various car rental companies. Find the representative for the company you booked with through QEEQ. They will be expecting you and will verify your name and reservation.
Proceed to the Shuttle Area
The representative will check you in and then direct you where to go. Typically, you will be guided to exit the terminal building. The main shuttle pickup area is located just across the street from the terminal exit. Follow the overhead signs for "Rental Car Shuttles" or "Transporte."
Board Your Shuttle
Wait in the designated area for your company's shuttle. The vehicles are always clearly branded with the rental company's logo (e.g., Alamo, Sixt, Enterprise), so they are easy to spot. The drivers will help you with your luggage, and the ride to the rental facility is usually just 5-10 minutes.

Costa Rica has a mandatory third-party liability insurance (often called PLI, TPL, or SLI) that must be purchased with any rental. Be sure you understand what your QEEQ booking includes and what you will be paying for at the counter.
Before driving off, do a complete walk-around of the car. Use your phone to take photos and a video of the car's condition, paying close attention to any existing scratches, dings, or dents. Ensure any damage is noted on the rental agreement before you sign it.
Cellular service is generally good in Costa Rica. Ask the agent if using a navigation app like Waze (which is extremely popular and accurate here) is recommended over a rented GPS unit.
Make sure you understand the fuel policy. Most rentals are "full-to-full," meaning you receive the car with a full tank and must return it full to avoid extra charges.
